John Stanley Newman (Stan) was born on January 11, 1921 near Caldwell, ID, the second child of three to Hubert and Bertha Newman. He grew up working on his parent’s dairy farm as well as delivering milk, graduating from Nampa High School in 1938. For a time he hitchhiked, carrying his violin and books from Nampa to the College of Idaho in Caldwell in order to get his education. He even hitchhiked with his violin from Nampa to Boise to play with the Boise Philharmonic.

Graduating from the College of Idaho with degrees in music and chemistry in 1942, he married Evelyn Beauchamp that same year. Stan was stationed with the Army Air Corps in California and Arizona during WWII, flying the P38 fighter and was a flight instructor to the Chinese. During that time the young couple had three children, Gary, Sharon, and Vicki.

Stan spent his entire career with the Amalgamated Sugar Co. (White Satin Sugar) beginning in Nampa where he helped build the plant in 1942. Stan moved to Nyssa, Oregon with his new family in 1947 where he was the chemist for the Nyssa Sugar Factory for more than 20years. In 1968, Stan was named Superintendent of the Nampa factory and was subsequently transferred to each of the five existing factories over the next few years. He again transferred to Boise to work in Operations for Amalgamated, but before retirement, he spent his final year with the company as Factory Manager, again at the Nampa plant.

He was involved in Lions Club, Knife and Fork, and played couples bridge in Nyssa.

In 1983, Stan married Rosemary Zittercob and they have since lived in Boise. He would love her children and grandchildren as he did his own.

Stan learned the game of golf while caddying as a young man in Broadmore Country Club in Nampa. His love for the game would last throughout his life. He played all over Idaho in tournaments and even kept extensive notes after each practice session, always trying to improve his game. He also enjoyed gardening and reading, and even sewed some clothes for his children just to prove he could. At one point he also took oil painting classes. Stan also loved to travel, especially to the Oregon Coast. He was knowledgeable and still eager to learn at age 96.

After a year of age related health problems, Stan was feeling great and died unexpectedly November 18, 2017 at Morningstar Retirement Living. Stan is survived by his wife, Rosemary; two children, Gary Newman and Vicki Binder, as well as Rose’s children, Ann Kouns (Bill) and Tom Zittercob (Robyn). He is also survived by his grandchildren; Lance Binder, Michelle Kinzer, Traci Binder, Bret Binder, Jay Kouns, Jami Lough, Robert Zittercob, Jack Zittercob, and Lillyan Housend, as well as 10 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ross; his sister, Bert; and his daughter, Sharon Binder.

Stan lived a full life and loved well, and was adored by his children and grandchildren, and we will all forever love and respect him.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 24, 2017 at Cloverdale Funeral Home in Boise, with burial at Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell at a later date.
